Ali Momeni


I am into dynamic systems and moving targets; he works with kinetics, electronics, software, sound, light, people, plants and animals.  His creative output ranges from sculptures and installations, to urban interventions and music theater performance.

My artistic and academic work is rooted in physics, music and computation and focused on three areas of activity at the intersection of art, design and technology: hybrid instrument (performance practice, physical computing, digital fabrication, enactive interfaces, gesture recognition and mapping), expanded theater (mixed reality, performer centric technologies, performative robotics, real-time multimedia systems) and urban intervention (large scale outdoor projection, mobility, public space).   I seek new ways to integrate humanistic thinking and artistic practice into disciplines outside of the arts.  I research and develop new instruments and experiences that create shared emotional experiences for people.  My work inverts our relationship with technology as consumers, by designing tech-mediated experiences that tap into human creativity, curiosity and empathy.


Momeni was born in Isfahan, Iran and emigrated to the United States at the age of twelve. He studied physics and music at Swarthmore College and completed his doctoral degree in music composition, improvisation and performance with computers from the Center for New Music and Audio Technologies in UC Berkeley. He spent three years in Paris where he collaborated with performers and researchers from La Kitchen, IRCAMSony CSL and CIRM. Between 2007 and 2011, Momeni was an assistant professor in the Department of Art at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, where he directed the Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Art, and founded the urban projection collective called the MAW. Momeni currently teaches in the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University and directs CMU ArtFab, co-directs CodeLab and teach in CMU’s IDEATE and Emerging Media Programs.
